How to Treat Hair That Won’t Take Color

How to Treat Hair That Won’t Take Color

From brown to blonde, blonde to blue, or even blue to red. As a hairstylist, you’ve probably had every request walk through your door, plop down in your chair, and expect the ultimate transformation. But you know this requires patience, process, and sometimes faith. We’ve all had clients whose hair will not take the color no matter how many times, brands, and formulas we try. If you’re experiencing this right now, don’t worry! You’ve come to the right place.

Have her try Deep Conditioner

Your client’s hair might be damaged from the excessive use of heat tools or dyes. If this is the case, you can prep for the next appointment by having her use a deep conditioner. This treatment will moisturize, strengthen and repair the damage in her hair before you color it.

Apply Protein Filler

Before you start the color process, use a neutral protein filler to equalize the porosity of the hair. This will help your client’s hair absorb the new color evenly and protect it from further damage.

Bump up the Developer

You can’t have color without a developer! If your client wants to add tone or tint to the same lightness level you’ll only need to use 10 Volume. If they are looking to lighten their hair from its original color you’ll need to bump the developer up to the next level. The more significant the change from their original color the higher the volume of developer you’ll need to achieve the desired results.

Try Extensions!

When you’ve exhausted every resource, tried every trick, and your client’s hair is still struggling to take color, then it’s time to reveal your secret weapon. Hair extensions! Babe Hair has a wide variety of vibrant colors you can use to add a pop of color or create a total transformation.
